The original National Bank of Commerce was reorganized in 1997, which is when NMB Bank first appeared. Three new organizations, NBC Holdings Limited, National Bank of Tanzania (1997), and National Microfinance Bank, were created under a law passed by Parliament. NMB Bank started up with a strong emphasis on savings accounts and a small lending portfolio.

NMB Bank underwent privatized in 2005. Up until that point, the bank’s sole owner, the Tanzanian government, sold 49% of its stock to the Dutch banking institution Rabobank. For NMB Bank, this collaboration represented a critical turning point.

The Tanzanian government subsequently reduced its ownership interest while continuing the sale process. A more diverse ownership structure was produced by the bank’s stock listing on the stock exchange as well. The “Ownership” section contains more information on the current ownership structure.
